Saving one gray dog at a time......

The Weimaraner is a serious study in drama vs. comedy. Those who share a household with a Weim must have incredible patience and a sense of humor!

Who should own a Weimaraner: only people and families who enjoy an active life style with lots of time outdoors.  They are excellent companions for runners, walkers and hikers.  If hunting is part of your recreation, they are an excellent personal gun dog.  They are thorough, meticulous hunters with a great nose and natural retrieving instincts.  As such, they need to live on a fenced property.

Who should NOT own a Weimaraner: Weimaraners require a serious time commitment.  Weimaraners do not do well when they have hours of time on their hands for they will take out their boredom on furnishings, or anything else they see as a source of amusement.  They are not a dog that can be relegated to a kennel situation.  They are strong and are not recommended for frail people.

Is a Weimaraner right for you? (Please take the time and take the quiz.  It will help you make an informed decision about whether or not a rescued Weimaraner is truly right for you.)

History of the Weimaraner

Atlanta Weimaraner Club & Rescue Mission:

The Atlanta Weimaraner Club Rescue (“AWCR”) is a group of Weimaraner enthusiasts and owners in the Atlanta area.  The mission of the club is to provide Weimaraner owners with a place to meet folks that enjoy doing things with their Weimaraners.  In addition to the social aspect of the club, the Atlanta Weimaraner Club provides for the rescue, care, and adoption of lost, surrendered and homeless Weimaraners.  The AWCR assists in re-homing Weimaraners by providing foster homes.  The funds for the rescue program are raised through various fundraising events and donations.  The Club also provides public education on the breed and responsible dog ownership.

In establishing our non-profit organization, we are looking for dedicated Weimaraner owners.  Our rescue program is run strictly on a volunteer basis.  Please join this group of dedicated individuals who are the true heart of the organization by becoming a member and helping raise funds to rescue our gray friends.  We have a dynamic group that has come together to dedicate time and focus on rescuing dogs through friendship, fun and fellowship!

Hear our humble prayer, O' God, for our friends the animals, especially for animals who are suffering; for any that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry; for all that must be put to death.  We entreat for them all thy mercy and pity and for those who deal with them we ask a heart of compassion gentle hands and kindly words.  Make us ourselves to be true friends to animals and so to share the blessing of the merciful. - Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965)

THANKS FOR SAVING ELY

 Ely’s Story….

Elijay (n/k/a Ely) was previously owned by drug addicts and landed in a shelter in Southern Georgia for a third time after being found wandering on a 4-lane highway. The owner was in jail and the shelter put out a “911” to recue groups to see if they could find a home for a dog who had spent 6 years suffering from neglect. The alternative was euthanasia. He weighs 44 pounds (a healthy weight would be 65-70 pounds), has heartworms, and needs to be neutered when HW treatment is complete.

Although the Atlanta Weimaraner Rescue and the other Weim Rescue groups in the southern region were unable to take him due to lack of funds and foster homes, a foster home was located for him in New York. (Rescue groups everywhere have been inundated in the last few months in large part due to the failing economy and have been “maxed out” with rescued dogs.)

After a huge coordination of efforts between the shelter, Greyhound rescue volunteers who pulled the dog from the shelter and transported him to Atlanta, Atlanta Weim rescue volunteers, a temporary foster home in North Georgia and transport coordinators on the East Coast, and of course the NY foster home willing to take a dog sight unseen, Ely has a chance.

As of Aug. 31, Ely has been fully vetted and is in a wonderful rural N. GA home that specializes in fostering Weimaraners pending the coordination of his transport to NY. His temporary foster reports that he settled in quickly, was very calm in the house, knows basic commands, and got along well with the other nine or so dogs currently homed there.

Although Ely’s rescue story is still in progress – we need to get him to NY -- he is the perfect example of how lives are saved every day by the diligent and caring people who volunteer their time, money, and homes to save dogs who deserve compassion and care.
